Here at NetPay, we have a big cardboard box to fill with warm clothes for the homeless during the festive season and we have asked employees to donate items. Last year we ran the same initiative for a homeless refuge in Portsmouth and it was an overwhelming success when we filled the big box for this great cause. That’s why we decided to do it again this year, especially as it’s Christmas and it’s the season of giving. Homeless people during this period are living on the streets in the extreme cold and wet and will appreciate even the smallest things.

People become homeless for lots of different reasons. There are social causes of homelessness, such as a lack of affordable housing, poverty and unemployment; and life events that cause individuals to become homeless. Individuals can become homeless when they leave prison, or the army with no home to go to. Many homeless men and women have escaped a violent relationship. Many people become homeless because they can no longer afford the rent.

And for many, life events like a relationship breaking down, losing a job, mental or physical health problems, or substance misuse can be the trigger. Being homeless can, in turn, make many of these problems even harder to resolve.

Accoriding to the last shelter report, at least 320,000 people are homeless, almost 5,000 are rough sleeping (likely to be a huge underestimate) and 726 people died homeless in England and Wales in 2018 (a 22% rise from 2017). (from https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/nov/19/rage-and-responsibility-nine-months-of-reporting-homeless-deaths-why-isnt-it-election-priority)

We have described this to highlight to the reader that becoming homeless is a very realistic possibility in a lot of people’s lives. There are many reasons that people become homeless and therefore you should be considerate and giving throughout the year but especially during the Winter months due to the conditions they are living in.

In conclusion, homelessness is a big issue and there is certainly a stigma against homelessness. But people need to be aware that there are a multitude of reasons causing people to become homeless. That’s why for NetPay it’s not just about donating clothes to charity but it also helps to raise awareness of the homeless situation in the UK.

There are numerous things individuals can do to get involved and help homelessness. You can fundraise at your work which helps raise team morale and raise money for this cause, can volunteer and make a difference to people experiencing homelessness or you can donate a one-off or recurring donation to individuals or organisations helping homelessness.
